Basically, electronic bicycles or e-bikes are bicycles with electric motor that powers up the vehicle or assists in pedalling. Although they are types of motorised vehicles, they remain to be classified as bicycles. So, they are not subject to the same laws as motor vehicles. However, in various locations, e-bikes are defined separately and treated as a specific vehicle type in many areas of legal jurisdiction.
These bikes are classed as standard bicycles in the UK, so riders need not require a licence to utilise them. Nevertheless, they must be at least fourteen years of age to be able to drive one. Moreover, each vehicle needs to have a motor with an output power that exceeds 250 watts. In the US, however, a maximum speed below 40 kph is required to be given a license. Likewise, they are not considered motorised vehicles and are subject to consumer safety laws just like unassisted units.
There are many types of electric bicycles with several available technologies, which vary in cost and complexity. Rechargeable batteries, electric motors, and some form of control devices are among the basic components to make one functional. But obviously, the energy costs of operating electric bicycles are small in comparison to other vehicles. Hence, riding one to the office instead of driving a car will surely offer long-term gains.
